1969, mettant en scène un oiseau observé et photographié par Jan
Dibbets.
Très tôt dans son parcours, Jan Dibbets
utilisa l’appareil photographique pour porter un point de vue sur le
monde différent, expressément monoculaire, que ce soit de façon
littérale dans ses « corrections de perspective », ou par
d’autres moyens comme dans les panoramas photographiques qui ont donné
lieu à la série des Montagnes hollandaises.

Robin Redbreast's Territory
is a book documenting a 1969 installation in an Amsterdam park by Jan
Dibbets, who observed and highlighted the movements of a robin through
a series of photographs. The book, published in 1970, is Dibbets’ only
Artist’s book
Early in his
development Jan Dibbets used the camera to provide a different,
specifically monocular, perspective on the world, literally through his
‘perspective corrections’, but also by other means such as the series
of photographic panoramas that led to the Dutch Mountains works.

Emmett Williams (1925-2007) fut, entre 1966 et 1970, éditeur, avec Dick
Higgins, de Something Else Press, d’où sortirent tant de livres
d’artistes liés au mouvement Fluxus. En 1973, Emmett Williams publie – chez Something Else Press et
chez Hansjörg Mayer – quatre longs poèmes autonomes, dont SOLDIER,
composés l’année précédente au California Institute of the Arts et
réunis en un seul volume sous le titre A Valentine for Noël.

Soldier
is a book of concrete poetry, where the narrative is evoked by the sole
use of typography. Page after page, death advances inexorably through
the lines.
Between 1966 and
1970, Emmett Williams (1925-2007) was the editor, with Dick Higgins, of
Something Else Press, which published a large number of books by
artists linked with the Fluxus movement. In 1973,
with Hansjörg Mayer and Something Else Press, Emmett Williams published
four long autonomous poems, including SOLDIER, composed the previous
year at the California Institute of the Arts, and collected in a single
volume entitled A Valentine for Noël.

La collection Reprint se
propose d’abriter la réédition d’un certain nombre de livres d’artistes
parus depuis le début des années 1960 et dont les auteurs comptent
maintenant parmi les figures pionnières de l’histoire de l’art
contemporain. Quoique presque toujours animées par le désir de rendre
l’art plus accessible en utilisant le support du livre comme moyen de
création à part entière, beaucoup de ces publications ont en réalité
peu circulé et sont maintenant devenues très rares, voire introuvables
si ce n’est à des prix spéculatifs qui en contredisent l’intention
initiale.
L’intérêt actuel des jeunes artistes pour le médium du livre, dont
témoigne une abondante production, tout comme la reconnaissance
publique du livre d’artiste, attestée par la multiplication des salons
et autres manifestations en France et à l’étranger, plaident en faveur
d’une remise à disposition des œuvres qui ont marqué son histoire
depuis cinquante ans, à destination d’un lectorat aujourd’hui fortement
demandeur.
Toutes les possibilités sont ouvertes, du fac-similé à la refonte en
passant par l’adaptation en français, dans le plus grand respect des
intentions initiales et, chaque fois que possible, en étroite
collaboration avec l’artiste qui en est l’auteur.

The Reprint Collection
is devoted to reprints of artist books published from the early 1960s
on, the authors of which are now among the pioneers in the history of
contemporary art. Although driven by a desire to make art more
accessible by using books as a pragmatic means to this end, many of
these publications were not widely circulated and have now become very
rare and nearly impossible to find. When they are available, the prices
are usually very high, which goes against the very reason for their
publication.
Current interest from young artists in the book medium, as shown by an
abundant production, as well as public recognition of the artist’s
book, proven by the many shows and other exhibitions in France and
abroad, all point to a favourable climate to rerelease works to
celebrate their 50th anniversary, for a public that is now attuned to
books as art, and hungry to consult pioneering works.
No options are off the table, from facsimiles to rereleases or to
French adaptations with the greatest respect for the author’s original
intentions and, whenever possible, in close collaboration with the
artist who is the author.
